Discovering Nuclear

For Alys Gardner, a career in nuclear began almost by chance. While finishing her degree in Physics with Business and Management, she was weighing up her options for the future. A conversation with a family friend working in the industry sparked her curiosity.

“I didn’t know much about nuclear, but it sounded like an exciting space to use my degree. I applied for the Atkins graduate scheme in their nuclear business, and I’ve never looked back. Fifteen years later, I’m still here – and still learning something new every day.”

A Career Without Limits

Alys’s path since then has been anything but linear. She began in highly technical roles, writing safety cases and supporting projects across nuclear sites. From there, she moved into business development, where she gained experience in procurement, bidding, marketing and social impact.

That mix of skills eventually brought her to the early formation of Great British Energy Nuclear (GBEN) – before the organisation officially existed.

“I’ve seen it grow from a set of recommendations on a page, through to a fully-fledged company that’s now focused on delivering the UK’s first small modular reactor. Being part of that journey has been an incredible experience.” Her current role is all about ensuring GBEN has the workforce needed to deliver on its mission. “It’s about getting the right people, with the right skills, in the right place at the right time. Every day is different – and we’re trying to do something the UK has never done before.”

Purpose and People

What motivates Alys most is the wider impact nuclear can have.

“This isn’t just about producing clean energy – though that’s vital. It’s also about creating jobs, boosting skills, and delivering long-term benefits to communities. The work we do will have a positive impact for generations.”

She also highlights the people she has met along the way. “The sector is full of passionate, committed individuals. I’ve learned so much from colleagues who really care about moving the industry forward. That passion is infectious.”

Volunteering has played a big part too. Through the Young Generation Network, Alys supported newcomers to the sector, helping them feel included and inspired. “It was a great way to give something back and connect with like-minded professionals who wanted to make the industry better.”

Why Nuclear?

Alys is keen to challenge the perception that nuclear careers are only for engineers and scientists.

“Yes, those roles are vital – but the sector needs so much more. Project managers, digital specialists, finance and HR professionals, communicators, logistics experts, construction workers – the opportunities are huge. And once you’re in, you’ll find your skills can be applied across different parts of the industry, from decommissioning and operations to new build and innovation.”

Breaking Down Barriers

For Alys, inclusion is key.

“The nuclear industry exists to serve society, and it needs to reflect society. That means breaking down barriers and making sure everyone can see a place for themselves in this sector. Initiatives like Destination Nuclear are crucial in showing people what’s possible.”

Advice for New Talent

Looking back, Alys credits her career success to staying open to new opportunities.

“I never had a strict career plan. I said yes to things that came my way – and those experiences built on each other. That approach gave me a career that’s diverse, fulfilling, and full of purpose.”

Her advice to anyone considering nuclear is simple:

“Just give it a go. The opportunities are far wider than you think. You can build a career that makes a real difference – not just in the UK, but around the world.”
