Accessibility statement for Destination Nuclear

This accessibility statement applies to www.destinationnuclear.com .

This website is run by Destination Nuclear. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • Zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
  • Skip directly to the main content on every page

We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some video content does not have synchronised captions. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.2.2 – Captions (Prerecorded).
  • Some pages use article elements for content that is not an article, blog post or self-contained piece of content. This may cause screen readers to announce content incorrectly and make page structure harder to understand. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • The cookie consent banner is not fully accessible to screen reader users because the tab structure is not correctly identified. The cookie dialog requires additional semantic markup to ensure tabs are announced correctly by assistive technologies. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).
  • Some pages contain headings that do not follow a logical hierarchical structure. Heading levels may be skipped or used out of sequence, making it more difficult for screen reader users to navigate content. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • Some links do not provide sufficient context for users to understand their purpose. The purpose of these links cannot always be determined from the link text alone or from its surrounding context. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose (In Context)).

We are working to resolve these issues and plan to complete the necessary improvements as part of our ongoing accessibility programme. The statement will be updated as fixes are implemented.

Technical information about this website's accessibility

Destination Nuclear is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

We are working with our development and content teams to resolve these issues and plan to complete the necessary improvements as part of our ongoing accessibility programme. We plan to have this in place, and to have reviewed all existing video content, by 31 December 2026.

Disproportionate burden

We have not made any claims of disproportionate burden.

Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents — Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video — We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we're doing to improve accessibility

In June 2026 we carried out a full WCAG 2.2 AA audit of this website. The following improvements were made as a result:

  • Added a skip-to-main-content link so keyboard users can bypass repeated navigation
  • Added correct landmark regions (header, nav, main) to every page
  • Fixed the mobile navigation button to correctly communicate its label and open/closed state to assistive technology
  • Fixed social media links in the footer so their accessible names are visible to screen readers
  • Added a label to the newsletter sign-up email field
  • Fixed the career quiz so radio button answers are accessible to keyboard and screen reader users
  • Added a progress indicator role to the quiz progress bar
  • Added open/closed state announcements to the career journey filter dropdown
  • Ensured decorative icons are hidden from assistive technology
  • Disabled scroll-triggered animations for users who have the 'reduce motion' preference enabled in their operating system
  • Fixed the header to correctly adjust scroll padding, ensuring focused elements are always visible.

We will continue to review accessibility as part of our ongoing development process.
