Meet Dean: multi-skilled operative at Babcock

After working in the hospitality sector as an operations manager, Dean was looking for a career with clear progression routes. Discovering that his skills were transferable to active roles in the nuclear sector, he applied for a role at Babcock.

Dean talks through his career so far, how he found the transition from hospitality into nuclear, and the advice he’d give to those looking to explore a career in the sector.

From hospitality to a thriving career in nuclear

Dean was an operations manager for an entertainment and hospitality company, working to cater hotels and events. Feeling the pull to work in an industry that has an important purpose, delivers impact, and has clear progression routes, Dean decided to apply for a role at Babcock.

Finding that many of his operational management skills transferred well into his new role in nuclear, Dean said, “I’ve always been interested in the Armed Forces, particularly the Royal Navy, so a role supporting submarines and defence was the perfect fit. I’ve found that my previous experience as an operations manager has made many of my skills transferable. In particular, my ability to multitask, respond to change, and problem-solve coherently.”

With balanced working patterns and on-the-job training to help people make the most of their existing skills and gain plenty of new ones, Dean noted that his new role was an ideal match. “I’ve found the work really enjoyable, and it’s really given me the step change in my career that I was looking for. I’ve also found that the work/life balance suits me better, especially compared to what I experienced working in the hospitality sector.”

Throughout his career so far as a Multi-Skilled Operative, Dean has discovered that he works alongside people in out-of-the-ordinary roles and has had the chance to support truly inspiring programmes.

Babcock is one of the most diverse employers in the nuclear sector, with roles spanning project management and quality assurance to cybersecurity and engineering.

He concludes, “I would actively encourage anyone looking to make a career change. Give yourself the chance to boost your career and reach your highest potential. I’ve found that Babcock will support you to achieve this.”
